OPEN Session: Software Architecture for Everyone: Be a Boundless Engineer!
Wednesday May 28, 2025 9:30am - 9:55am PDT
Vrushanki Patel, Oracle, Software Engineer

When discussing technology, we as software engineers perceive software architecture and system design as advanced concepts reserved for later stages of the career—perhaps at senior levels or after years of experience. But is that really the case? If yes, then why is there often a disconnect between engineers, tech leads, and managers? A lack of clarity in system architecture and its design decisions—understanding not just the how but the why behind implementations—can narrow a developer’s perspective and limit collaboration across roles.

Seeing engineers across teams and levels struggle with architectural decisions during the development phase—whether junior developers or experienced professionals. Through discussions with engineers in various organizations, one thing is clear: the lack of architectural thinking often leads to confusion, unnecessary rework, increased refactoring cycles, and reduced productivity. Let's all join in and start creating an environment where architectural thinking becomes second nature, driving better software and innovation at every level. When I say every level, it means from junior engineer to senior developer to tech lead to manager. This gap exists everywhere, and addressing it early can transform how we build software when the tech industry is rising exponentially to AI.

The talk will provide a deep dive into:

1. A step-by-step guide to bridging the architectural thinking gap with a live walkthrough of an example architecture, building confidence in engineers.
2. A roadmap for developers to take self-initiative in understanding the architecture of the systems they work on.
3. Strategic action items for tech leads and managers, as the driving force of any team, to foster architectural thinking at every level and across organizations.

PRO Session: Evolving the Engineer: A Leadership Roadmap for the AI Era
Wednesday May 28, 2025 10:30am - 10:55am PDT
Andrew Park, Edensoft Labs, Founder

AI is here—and it’s transforming software engineering faster than most leaders are prepared for. GenAI tools like Copilot and Cursor are boosting productivity by automating routine coding tasks, but they’re also contributing to significant layoffs. Pure software engineering roles are under threat, and leaders urgently need a plan to evolve their teams.
In this talk, Andrew Park—a longtime Engineering and Product Leader—delivers a clear, field-tested roadmap for evolving engineers in the AI era. He shows how to help your teams harness AI for speed—while leveling up in the areas GenAI can’t touch: product thinking, system design, craftsmanship, maintainability, and the collaboration skills needed to work across product, design, customers, and dependent teams.
You’ll walk away with a practical strategy for transforming engineering roles and building smaller, more capable teams—enabling your organization to meet executive demands to do more with less, without sacrificing product quality or long-term agility. This is how you secure engineering careers—and your product’s future—in an AI-driven world.

Ruchir Jha, CardinalHQ, CEO and cofounder

Alert fatigue. Blind spots. Constant tuning. Managing alerts in modern observability stacks is harder than it should be. As systems evolve, telemetry changes with your code and business logic — yet alerts are still handcrafted, brittle, and often stale.

In this talk, we’ll explore the common pitfalls of traditional alerting: the lack of semantic consistency across telemetry, the overhead of keeping alerts in sync with evolving systems, and the deluge of low-signal symptoms that drown out meaningful incidents. We’ll show how OpenTelemetry (OTEL) can help standardize signal collection, and more importantly, how it can enable autonomous alerting — where your system continuously adapts, learns from your telemetry, and only raises its hand when it really matters.

Whether you’re drowning in dashboards or just starting your observability journey, this talk offers a vision for how alerting can be smarter, leaner, and less manual

OPEN Session: Staying in Your Lane: Incident Response for Leaders
Wednesday May 28, 2025 3:30pm - 3:55pm PDT
Kat Gaines, PagerDuty, Senior Manager, Developer Advocacy and Community

During incident response, every second counts. As a leader, you’re expected to have all the answers, and that pressure can make it very tempting to play the hero and take control of the response process. While “I’ll just do it myself” may seem faster on occasion, this instinct can hinder your team’s effectiveness and actually slow down resolution.

We’ll explore how you can evolve from a command-and-control manager into a genuinely empowering leader. You’ll learn how to maintain composure under pressure while creating space for your team to shine. We’ll cover essential frameworks, usable by new managers and individual contributors building incident response processes from scratch as well as experienced leaders looking to level up their approach.

Key takeaways will include:
How to recognize when you may be over-managing during an incident…and how to empower your team to help you recognize these moments.
Building team confidence and ownership in crisis situations
Clear guidelines for when to step in versus step back
Establishing and maintaining clear communication channels
Whether you’re establishing your first incident response playbook, fine-tuning an existing process, or managing up to help your leaders help you do your best work, you’ll leave equipped to help your team handle incidents more effectively - and help you sleep better at night knowing they’ve got this.

OPEN Session: So You Want to Hire for Platform Engineering?
Thursday May 29, 2025 10:30am - 10:55am PDT
Hazel Weakly, Nivenly Foundation, Fellow

I see you want to hire a developer to work on platform engineering, internal developer tooling, developer experience, and the overall generally intangible but admirable goal of "making life better for devs". That’s awesome; you've got one hell of a challenge ahead of you. This role is extremely difficult to hire for. In my opinion, and in my experience, it’s been the most difficult role in the company outside of senior leadership, and the most likely to fail; if there ever was a role that burns people out, it’s this one.

Come with Hazel as we draw on her experiences building platform teams and organizations in order to talk about making this platform engineering thing a reality. In doing so, we'll end up discussing topics such as

- The hiring pipeline and interview loop
- Timing, politics, and the meta strategies

[Virtual] OPEN Session: Software Architecture for Everyone: Be a Boundless Engineer!
Wednesday June 4, 2025 9:30am - 9:55am PDT

[Virtual] PRO Session: So You Want to Hire for Platform Engineering?
Thursday June 5, 2025 10:30am - 10:55am PDT

- Getting to zero from negative
- Avoiding pitfalls
