[Virtual] OPEN Session: Software Architecture for Everyone: Be a Boundless Engineer!
Wednesday June 4, 2025 9:30am - 9:55am PDT
Vrushanki Patel, Oracle, Software Engineer

When discussing technology, we as software engineers perceive software architecture and system design as advanced concepts reserved for later stages of the career—perhaps at senior levels or after years of experience. But is that really the case? If yes, then why is there often a disconnect between engineers, tech leads, and managers? A lack of clarity in system architecture and its design decisions—understanding not just the how but the why behind implementations—can narrow a developer’s perspective and limit collaboration across roles.

Seeing engineers across teams and levels struggle with architectural decisions during the development phase—whether junior developers or experienced professionals. Through discussions with engineers in various organizations, one thing is clear: the lack of architectural thinking often leads to confusion, unnecessary rework, increased refactoring cycles, and reduced productivity. Let's all join in and start creating an environment where architectural thinking becomes second nature, driving better software and innovation at every level. When I say every level, it means from junior engineer to senior developer to tech lead to manager. This gap exists everywhere, and addressing it early can transform how we build software when the tech industry is rising exponentially to AI.

The talk will provide a deep dive into:

1. A step-by-step guide to bridging the architectural thinking gap with a live walkthrough of an example architecture, building confidence in engineers.
2. A roadmap for developers to take self-initiative in understanding the architecture of the systems they work on.
3. Strategic action items for tech leads and managers, as the driving force of any team, to foster architectural thinking at every level and across organizations.

[Virtual] KEYNOTE (Leadership): Stealth Startup -- Rapid Decisions, Rapid Deployment: Transforming Delivery Through Empowerment
Wednesday June 4, 2025 11:00am - 11:25am PDT
Vilas Veeraraghavan, Stealth startup, Technical Leader

Platform teams tend to start out being lean but tend to slowly lose agility as they grow and expand their scope. This typically results in delayed rollouts of tools and other enablement needs that Dev teams have. However, these delays in decision making in critical tooling development within DevEx or Platform teams results in developer frustration and slows down delivery to the end customer (which impacts revenue). In my past life as a leader of Dev Platforms, I have experienced this and developed some techniques to prevent this slowdown over time. I have seen how distributing the decision making using engineering rigor allows DevEx/Platform teams to empower themselves and drive outcomes. In this talk, I will share the framework I have honed over years of leadership at Comcast, Netflix, Walmart and Bill with the audience. The framework relies on 4 key pillars - Always lead with data/reasoning, Know the business needs, Own and invest in your decisions, Empathize with the developer.

This talk will equip engineering leaders with a tool to create effective delivery enablement within their engineering organizations.

Alert fatigue. Blind spots. Constant tuning. Managing alerts in modern observability stacks is harder than it should be. As systems evolve, telemetry changes with your code and business logic — yet alerts are still handcrafted, brittle, and often stale.

In this talk, we’ll explore the common pitfalls of traditional alerting: the lack of semantic consistency across telemetry, the overhead of keeping alerts in sync with evolving systems, and the deluge of low-signal symptoms that drown out meaningful incidents. We’ll show how OpenTelemetry (OTEL) can help standardize signal collection, and more importantly, how it can enable autonomous alerting — where your system continuously adapts, learns from your telemetry, and only raises its hand when it really matters.

Whether you’re drowning in dashboards or just starting your observability journey, this talk offers a vision for how alerting can be smarter, leaner, and less manual

[Virtual] OPEN Session:The Dual Edge of Multimodal AI: Advancing Accessibility While Navigating Bias
Wednesday June 4, 2025 1:30pm - 1:55pm PDT
Naman Goyal , Google Deepmind, Machine Learning Engineer

Multimodal AI systems—capable of processing text, images, audio, and video simultaneously—present transformative opportunities for accessibility while introducing complex challenges related to bias and fairness. This presentation explores this duality through evidence-based analysis of current implementations and future directions.
For individuals with disabilities, multimodal AI creates unprecedented opportunities: visual recognition systems achieve high accuracy for common objects, real-time speech-to-text transcription operates with minimal error rates, and adaptive learning technologies significantly improve information retention for neurodivergent learners. However, these same systems exhibit concerning bias patterns: recruitment algorithms show substantial ranking disparities across demographics, speech recognition error rates vary considerably across accents, and many images containing gender bias can be traced to problematic relationships between visual elements and text annotations.
The presentation outlines a comprehensive framework for responsible development including: inclusive design principles (with evidence that disability consultants identify many more potential accessibility barriers), representative dataset curation (addressing the reality that images in computer vision datasets rarely include people with visible disabilities), rigorous testing methodologies (conventional sampling typically captures very few users with disabilities), and ethical governance considerations (most AI practitioners want clearer accessibility standards).
Through case studies including image description technologies (showing notable accuracy disparities between Western and non-Western cultural contexts), diverse speech recognition (where community-driven data collection reduced error rates for underrepresented accent groups), and emotion recognition systems (with higher error rates for non-Western expressions), the presentation provides practical insights for developing multimodal AI that enhances accessibility without reinforcing existing inequities.

Wednesday June 4, 2025 2:00pm - 2:25pm PDT
Sourav Khandelwal, Databricks, Software Engineer

In the age of large-scale AI—where workloads like LLM model serving and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) demand massive compute capacity on short notice—efficient, reliable, and self-service infrastructure is essential. At Databricks, we faced the challenge of orchestrating a rapidly growing fleet of Kubernetes clusters spanning multiple clouds, regions, and use cases to power AI-driven solutions. The result was a patchwork of manual processes that were both costly in engineering hours and prone to human error.

In this session, you’ll learn how at Databricks, we overcame these challenges by building principled platform abstractions—clean, self-serve interfaces that application teams can use to provision, configure, and manage their Kubernetes clusters in a standardized, automated way. We’ll detail our journey from fragmented workflows to a scalable infrastructure platform that underpins products such as LLM model serving and RAG, allowing for quick, repeatable scale-out of AI-driven workloads.

We’ll also share the hard lessons learned, including the trade-offs between flexibility and uniformity, as well as strategies for ensuring consistent cluster management patterns across diverse environments. By highlighting how these platform abstractions free up engineering resources and streamline high-demand AI use cases, we’ll showcase how this approach accelerates product development cycles while simplifying day-to-day operations.

[Virtual] OPEN Session: The Age of Industrial AI Agents: Opportunities & Challenges
Wednesday June 4, 2025 2:00pm - 2:25pm PDT
Apurv Sibal, Wiley, Author

An AI Agent is an intelligent ‘computer’ system capable of agency, i.e. independent decision making and autonomous action based on contextualized situational awareness using sensing, perception, (causal) world modeling and a nuanced understanding of one's own agency and its impact on the world. Communicative AI agents are set to revolutionize human-machine collaborative systems and workflows whereby humans and agents can engage in natural multimodal communication in the same way as humans do. The agents can operate in a continuum of delegated autonomy modes, offloading data-intensive tasks needing high throughput, invoke backend tools to carry out a series of sophisticated actions, while not compromising human oversight or judgment. While such agents are poised to transform industries as diverse as healthcare and manufacturing, significant challenges remain in creating industrial strength agents that can operate robustly in open-world settings, exhibit both common sense reasoning and formal, domain-specific knowhow, are instructable and conform to human expectations, and communicate with high precision and accuracy backed by domain-specific grounded explanations. Our technical session will draw on Apurv's own experiences, and he will will present and discuss the opportunities and the challenges to creating industrial-strength agents that can provide real-value to the industry and the society at large, in a risk-free and safe fashion.
